Azerbaijan is proving itself to be one of the most economically vital countries in the region, thanks to its significant oil revenues. A possible, or even probable, escalation of the conflict with Armenia over the contended territory of Nagorno-Karabakh into a military one is a major cause of concern. The country has a great cultural tradition and is seriously interested in western investments. Its non-religious and tolerant regime, albeit not fully democratic, allows investors promising results.
