Kazakhstan is the most important country in the region, both for its strategic position, which makes it crucial to local balances, and for its conspicuous energy resources. So far the government of President Nazarbayev has ensured the country a remarkable economic and social growth, even if the country’s growth in the democratic sense is still pending. Though Kazakhstan is reasonably secular, in recent years phenomena of Islamic terrorism have made their appearance, and a general upsurge of Islam can be observed in various parts of the country, the south in particular.
